Digit Sucking

Thumb Sucking in Children Information

Digit sucking refers to the habit of sucking on a thumb, finger, or other body part, and is a completely normal and common behavior in infants and young children. It provides comfort and helps many babies self-soothe, especially during sleep or times of stress.

According to the AAPD, most children naturally stop thumb or finger sucking between ages 2 and 4. If the habit continues beyond the eruption of permanent front teeth (usually around age 6), it may begin to affect the development of the mouth and teeth.

Prolonged digit sucking can lead to:

  • Changes in the roof of the mouth (palate)

  • Misalignment of the upper and lower front teeth

  • Speech development issues

  • Open bite or crossbite

The intensity of the habit matters:
Children who vigorously suck their thumb for long periods are more likely to develop dental changes than those who do so passively.

At Allstar Pediatric Dentistry, we’ll monitor your child’s oral development and discuss any concerns related to thumb or finger sucking at each visit. If intervention is needed, we’ll guide your family with compassionate, age-appropriate strategies tailored to your child’s needs.
